There’s something about being outside, really outside, that shifts everything.
Fresh air, movement, and just enough effort to feel like you showed up for yourself. A long walk. A real hike.
It’s a different kind of self-care. The kind that pulls you out of your head, out of your routine, and reminds you of the life you’re working so hard to create.
This is my version of an active main character day.
Not just to move my body, but to step out of the day-to-day and reconnect with something a little bigger.
It’s not about a workout. It’s about getting out of your head, into your body, and reconnecting with yourself in a different way.
Not extreme. Not all-or-nothing. Just intentional.
These are the things I reach for when I want to get out, move my body, and actually enjoy it without overthinking it or turning it into something complicated.
Because when it feels good, I’ll do it again.
These are the simple things that make it easier to get out the door and actually enjoy it, without turning it into something complicated.

What I Wear
Comfortable, Flattering Activewear
Something I feel good in and don’t have to constantly adjust.
If I don’t feel comfortable, I’m not going to want to move. If I feel good in what I’m wearing, I’m way more likely to stay out longer.
Supportive Sneakers
This is non-negotiable.
Whether it’s a walk, a light hike, or just being on my feet longer than usual, the right shoes make everything better.
Sunglasses
Not just for style (though they help).
If I’m squinting the entire time, I’m not enjoying the moment.
Hat or Visor
Especially in the summer.
It keeps the sun off my face and somehow makes everything feel more put together.
Sunscreen
This goes here and in my bag, because reapplication matters.
I’ve learned this the hard way.
Sunscreen isn’t optional, and neither is reapplying if I’m outside for more than a quick walk.
Future me always appreciates it.

What I Carry
Lightweight Backpack or Crossbody
I don’t want to feel weighed down.
Just something small that holds what I need without making it feel like I’m packing for a full day.
Phone (for pictures, music, an audiobook, podcasts, or nothing at all)
Sometimes I listen to something. Sometimes I don’t.
But having the option makes it easier to get out the door.
I like wearing leggings or shorts with a pocket deep enough to keep my phone safe and secure but easily accessible.
What Goes In My Bag
Water Bottle
If I’m even a little dehydrated, I feel it.
Having water with me makes it easier to stay out longer and actually enjoy what I’m doing.
Extra Sunscreen
Because I will forget otherwise.
Lip Balm
Small, but makes a difference, especially in the heat or wind.
Hair Tie
Even if I didn’t plan to use it, I usually end up needing one.
Small Snack
Not always necessary, but when I need it, I’m very glad I brought it.
Trail mix, granola or protein, dried fruit, whatever works for you.
Extra Hat
May not be necessary but if the wind has other plans for the first one, you’ll appreciate having a back up.
This is the kind of self-care that doesn’t feel like a routine, but still gives you the same reset.
Why This Works
I’ve realized I don’t avoid “active days” because I don’t want to move.
I avoid them when they feel like too much effort. Or when I forget that this counts as self-care too.
When I feel unprepared.
When I’m uncomfortable.
When it feels like I need to plan everything perfectly. Or when I forget that this doesn’t have to be complicated to matter.
This setup removes that.
Everything is simple, easy to grab, and actually enjoyable to use.
So getting out the door feels like a small decision instead of a big one.
And once I’m out there?
I’m reminded why I wanted to go in the first place.
These are the items I come back to over and over.

Final Thoughts
This is my version of an active main character day.
Not perfect.
Not over-the-top.
Just intentional.
And something I’ll actually do again. A different kind of self-care that doesn’t feel forced.
A simple way to step out of my routine, clear my head, and reconnect with the life I’m working so hard to create.
