Romance Authors I’ll Read Every Single Time

There are a lot of romance authors out there.

Some I try once and move on from. Some I enjoy but don’t necessarily go back to. And then there are the ones I’ll read without even thinking twice; the authors I trust to pull me in from the very first chapter.

These are those authors for me.

They’re the ones I come back to again and again, the ones who consistently deliver on chemistry, story, and writing, and the ones who have shaped what I look for in a romance novel.

What Makes an Author a “Must Read” for Me

For me, it comes down to a few things:

  • Strong, believable chemistry
  • Characters I actually care about
  • Writing that pulls me in quickly
  • And stories that stay with me after I finish

Once I find an author who consistently delivers on those, I’m all in

Authors I Always Come Back To (in no particular oder)

Lucy Score

This one is an easy first choice.

She does it all – small town, romantic comedy, and even some romantic suspense – and somehow manages to balance humor, emotion, and chemistry every time.

What really sets her apart for me is how well she builds her worlds. The towns feel real, the side characters matter, and the relationships always feel worth investing in. I’ve read enough of her books at this point that she’s one of the few authors I’ll pick up without even reading the synopsis.

This is where I go when I want to completely escape.

I never thought alien romance would be for me. I’d never even given it a thought until I came across it in another book I was reading. That book wasn’t great for me overall, but the most interesting part was when the main character mentioned Ice Planet Barbarians and even read part of it to her long-distance love interest. It stuck with me enough that I looked it up to see if it was a real book and decided to give it a try.

I have zero regrets.

Once I started, I was all in. Her alien romances are immersive, creative, and somehow still very emotional and character-driven. I ended up reading everything I could get my hands on in that world.

At this point, I kind of think of all her alien universe books as one big series since there’s some overlap and once you’re in, it’s very hard to stop.

Then she released Bound to the Battle God, and that became my new favorite. The Aspect & Anchor series, with its gods and mortals dynamic, feels completely different but still delivers on the same strong relationships and addictive storytelling.

Where to start:

Julie Garwood

I started reading her in high school, and she’s one of the few authors I still go back to regularly.

What I love about her is that she does both historical romance and contemporary romantic suspense and she does both really well. Her historical romances are immersive and character-driven, while her suspense books are typically a little edgier.

One of my favorite things is that her romantic suspense characters are often descendants of her historical romance characters, which adds a fun layer if you’ve read both.

Where to start:

Judith McNaught

If I’m in the mood for something emotional and immersive, this is where I go.

She writes both historical and contemporary romance, and while the settings are different, the emotional intensity is always there. Some of her contemporary books also have elements of suspense, which adds another layer without taking away from the romance.

A Kingdom of Dreams is probably my favorite historical romance of all time. It’s one of those stories that completely pulls you in, the kind where the relationship builds with so much tension and payoff that you can’t stop thinking about it after you finish.

Her books tend to have a slower build (a lot of miscommunication that will have you yelling at the characters), but when everything comes together, it really works. This is the kind of author I go to when I want to get completely submerged in a story.

Where to start:

Linda Howard

Her older books especially are where she really shines for me.

Mr. Perfect is probably my favorite by Linda Howard – almost tied with Kiss Me While I Sleep. Both are romantic suspense and honestly as close to perfect as it gets for me. Mr. Perfect has everything: suspense, romance, humor, and some serious steam. It’s one of those books I can go back to again and again and still enjoy just as much.

What I love most about her writing is how well she blends romance with tension. The stakes always feel real, the pacing keeps things moving, and the chemistry never gets lost in the plot.

Her newer books tend to be a bit more of a slow build, but her older ones are faster-paced and incredibly easy to get into, and those are the ones I find myself rereading the most.

If I’m in the mood for something that feels a little edgier, a little more intense, and still completely focused on the relationship, she’s always a solid choice.

Where to start:

Susan Elizabeth Phillips

Her books are one of those perfect middle grounds for me – sweet, emotional, and still steamy, with just enough humor mixed in. There are definitely funny moments, but I wouldn’t really consider her books rom-coms. They lean more into character-driven storytelling and emotional growth than straight humor.

What I really like about her writing is how much the characters evolve. They’re not perfect, and the relationships don’t come easy, which makes the payoff feel more real. You actually see the characters change and grow into the relationship, instead of just falling into it.

Her books tend to have a little bit of everything – emotion, tension, humor, and strong chemistry – which makes them easy to get invested in and even easier to remember after you finish.

Where to start:

J.A. Huss

This is where I go when I want something a little darker, edgier, and definitely not predictable.

Her books are unapologetically naughty, a little intense, and always feel like they’re building toward something bigger. There’s usually a twist (or several) and even when you think you know where the story is going, she tends to take it in a completely different direction.

What I like most is that her stories don’t follow the typical romance formula. The relationships can be complicated, the situations are often unconventional, and the emotional payoff feels different from what you get in more traditional romance.

This isn’t what I pick up when I want something light, but when I’m in the mood for something bold, a little risky, and completely absorbing, she always delivers.

Where to start:

Geneva Lee

When I’m in the mood for something a little more polished, dramatic, and a bit indulgent, this is where I go.

Most of what I’ve read from her is from the Royals Saga, which spans multiple books and follows several couples within the same world. It’s one of those series where once you get into it, it’s easy to keep going because everything is connected.

The stories lean more into that high-gloss, royal/billionaire vibe with strong chemistry and a lot of emotional tension. Some of the relationships explore more dominant/submissive dynamics to varying degrees, which adds another layer depending on the couple and the storyline.

For me, these are the kinds of books I pick up when I want something a little more intense and dramatic, but still easy to get into and hard to put down.

Where to start:

Louise Bay

If I’m in the mood for billionaire romance but want something a little lighter and easier to get into, this is where I go.

Her books focus on rich, successful characters, but they’re quick reads that still manage to pull you into the relationships and storylines. The chemistry is strong, the pacing moves quickly, and they’re easy to pick up and finish without feeling heavy.

What I also like is that these don’t lean into the dominant/submissive dynamic that some billionaire romances do. They still deliver on the romance and tension, but in a way that feels a little more straightforward and accessible.

These are the kinds of books I reach for when I want something engaging, polished, and easy to get lost in without a lot of emotional heaviness. Perfect when I want something I can pick up and finish in a couple sittings.

Where to start:

Victoria Aveline

To my knowledge, she primarily writes the Clecanian (Alien) series—and honestly, that’s more than enough.

If you’re going to be abandoned on an alien planet, it might as well be one that values women and has a problem you can help solve. That’s part of what makes this series so engaging, – it flips expectations in a way that makes the relationships feel even more interesting.

What I really love is the world-building. There are multiple alien races living on the same planet, and the way she explains how they’re similar to and different from humans makes everything feel immersive without being overwhelming.

But beyond the world itself, the relationships are what really pull me in. The connections build in a way that feels emotional and intentional, and when it pays off, it really delivers. The steam is definitely there, but it never feels like it’s taking over the story; it works with the relationship instead of replacing it.

These are the kinds of books that pull you into a completely different world, but still keep the focus on strong relationships and emotional connection.

Start the series with Choosing Theo

Blair Babylon

If I’m in the mood for something fast-paced, dramatic, and a little over-the-top in the best way, this is where I go.

Her stories revolve around rich, powerful, often royal men and the women they fall for, with settings that move across countries and high-end worlds. There’s a definite globe-trotting feel to a lot of her books, which keeps things interesting and adds to the overall intensity.

The relationships tend to build quickly, the stakes feel high, and there’s always something going on, whether it’s tension, drama, or just the pull between the characters. The chemistry is strong, the pacing moves fast, and the stories are very easy to get caught up in. They also tend to include a bit of action and mystery, which adds another layer and keeps things from ever feeling slow. Some of the relationships also explore dominant/submissive dynamics, depending on the story.

One thing to know going in: some of her stories are released in parts or installments. So if you prefer a complete story from beginning to end, you’ll want to make sure you’re picking up a full book or completed series.

These are the kinds of books I pick up when I want something intense, a little chaotic, and completely absorbing.

Where to start:

Sylvia Day

I love, love, love the Crossfire series. It’s easily one of my top three all-time favorites. Like, if I could only pick a handful of books or series, this would be one of them.

Her stories are intense, steamy, and completely all-consuming. The relationships aren’t simple or easy—they’re complex, messy, and built around characters who are flawed and, in many ways, a little damaged. But that’s what makes the connection feel so real and so hard to look away from.

The dynamic between the characters can lean into a more dominant/submissive energy at times, but it’s always tied to the emotional depth of the relationship. It’s not just about the chemistry, it’s about how deeply connected the characters are, even when things aren’t perfect.

While Crossfire is what I go back to the most, she’s written other books that hit in very different ways. Afterburn/Aftershock still brings that intensity and chemistry but in a more condensed story, and Butterfly in Frost takes a much more emotional approach, focusing on loss, grief, and finding love through some of the hardest things people can go through.

No matter the setting or story, her books always deliver on emotional depth, strong connection, and a level of intensity that’s hard to put down.

If I’m in the mood for something intense, emotional, and impossible to walk away from, this is where I go. These are the kinds of books that pull you in emotionally and don’t really let go.

Why I Keep Coming Back to These Authors

At the end of the day, it comes down to trust.

These are the authors I don’t hesitate to pick up because I know what I’m getting – a story that will pull me in, characters I’ll care about, and a romance that’s actually worth the time.

And once I find an author like that, I’ll read everything they write.
