There’s just something about a small town romance that always pulls me in.
Maybe it’s the sense of community, the familiar characters, or the way the setting starts to feel like a place you could actually visit. Whatever it is, these are the books I reach for when I want something that feels a little more grounded but still delivers on the chemistry, the emotion, and (let’s be honest) the spice.
For me, the best small town romances all have a few things in common:
- A setting that feels alive (the town is basically a character)
- Side characters you actually care about
- A mix of humor and emotion
- And relationships that feel a little more real, even when the chemistry is intense
When it’s done right, it’s the perfect balance of comfort and connection.
These are the small town romances I couldn’t put down and the ones I still think about long after finishing them.

Small Town Romances I Recommend Again and Again
When it comes to small town romance, I tend to stick with authors I know and love, my tried and true rock stars, so to speak. It takes time to find a book that really pulls me in, and I don’t want to waste it on something that doesn’t deliver in the first chapter. So once I find a writer who can build a town that feels real and characters I care about, I’ll read everything they write in that world.
A lot of the small town romances on my favorites list are by Lucy Score. I have yet to find an author that does a better job of creating a town and townsfolk that matter just as much as the main characters and still delivers on the steam. So you can’t go wrong with any of her small town rom-com books.
These are my favorite Lucy Score small town romance stories:
- The Knockemout Series by Lucy Score – start with Things We Never Got Over
This is one of those series where the town completely pulls you in. The characters feel real, the banter is great, and the chemistry hits right away. It’s funny, emotional, and very easy to binge. This was my favorite small town series until the author outdid herself with the new Story Lake series.
- The Blue Moon Series by Lucy Score – start with No More Secrets
This one leans a little more into the quirky small town vibe. It’s lighter, funnier, and full of those side characters you end up loving just as much as the main couple.
- Rock Bottom Girl by Lucy Score
This one feels a little more grounded and relatable. It has that mix of humor and personal growth with a romance that builds in a really satisfying way.
- The Bootleg Springs series by Lucy Score and Claire Kingsley – start with Whiskey Chaser
Small town + mystery + romance = completely addictive. The ongoing mystery keeps you hooked through the series, and each book gives you a new romance and just enough answers to keep going.
- The Story Lake Series by Lucy Score – start with Story Of My Life
This one has that cozy, immersive feel where the town becomes part of the story. It’s emotional, funny, character-driven, and easy to get lost in. Just be forewarned, at the time of posting, the series is not complete. Each book has its own romance but the characters and storyline evolve through the series.

Other small town romances I really got into are:
- Jamison Valley series by Devney Perry – start with The Coppersmith Farmhouse
These lean a little more emotional and intense, with a bit of suspense woven into the story. The relationships feel deeper, and the stakes feel a little higher.
- The Highland Fling by Meghan Quinn
This one is fun, chaotic in the best way, and full of personality. If you like humor mixed into your romance, this one definitely delivers.
- The Kingston Family series by Carly Phillips – start with Just One Night
This leans more toward a close-knit community than a traditional small town, but it still has that connected feel where all the characters overlap. If you like relationship-driven stories with strong emotional ties, this one is easy to get into.
- The Edens series by Devney Perry – start with Indigo Ridge
This one pulls you in right away with a mix of small town charm and a bit of suspense. The chemistry builds naturally, and the added tension in the storyline keeps it from ever feeling slow.

Why I Keep Coming Back to This Genre
Small town romance is one of those genres I never get tired of.
It’s comforting without being boring, emotional without being overwhelming, and when the chemistry is right, it’s just as addictive as any high-drama romance.
It’s also the kind of genre where once you find a town or a group of characters you love, you want to keep reading every story connected to it, which makes it even harder to stop at just one book.
