Romantic Comedy Books That Actually Made Me Laugh (and Still Delivered on the Steam)

There’s a difference between a book that’s supposed to be funny… and one that actually makes you laugh out loud.

Romantic comedies are one of my favorite types of romance when I want something lighter, but still engaging. I don’t want something that feels shallow or forced. I want strong chemistry, great timing, and characters that feel real enough that the humor actually works.

When it’s done right, a good rom-com gives you the best of both worlds – something fun and easy to read, but still worth getting invested in.

These are the ones that delivered for me.

What Makes a Good Rom-Com (for me)

For a romantic comedy to really work, I need:

  • Natural, not forced humor
  • Strong banter (this is huge)
  • Characters that feel real
  • And chemistry that still holds up beyond the funny moments

If the relationship doesn’t feel believable, the humor alone isn’t enough.

Romantic Comedy Books I Loved

A lot of the romantic comedies I come back to are by Lucy Score. She consistently gets the balance right.

Her books are consistently funny without feeling forced, and the banter actually feels natural instead of overdone. But what I really like is that even with all the humor, the relationships still feel real and worth investing in. It’s not just about the laughs, you still get strong chemistry, emotional moments, and characters you care about.

If I’m in the mood for a rom-com, she’s almost always my first choice.

My Favorite Lucy Score Rom-Coms

  • The Riley Thorn Series by Lucy Score – Start with The Dead Guy Next Door
This one is utter madness in the best way. It’s completely chaotic, but still manages to bring the steam. The humor hits right away, and the banter between the characters makes it hard not to keep reading.
  • Rock Bottom Girl by Lucy Score
A mix of humor and real-life struggles, which makes the romance feel even more satisfying. It’s funny, but still grounded. I find I go back to this one when I’m struggling; it’s one of those books that just makes me feel better.
  • By A Thread by Lucy Score
This may have been the first Lucy Score book I read, and it completely hooked me. The workplace tension mixed with sharp banter makes it both funny and addictive, and the chemistry builds in a way that really pulls you in.
  • Mistakes Were Made by Lucy Score
This one leans into the chaos and awkwardness in the best way, with humor that feels natural instead of forced. The chemistry builds right alongside the tension, which makes it both funny and hard to put down.

If you like this kind of humor mixed with strong relationships, you might also like my small town romance favorites.

Other Rom-Coms That Delivered

These are a few others that made me laugh and kept me reading:

  • Pucked by Helena Hunting
This one is over-the-top funny in places, but it works. If you like bold humor and strong personalities, this is an easy one to get into.
  • Shopping for a Billionaire by Julia Kent
Fast, funny, and very easy to read. It doesn’t take itself too seriously, which makes it perfect when you just want something entertaining.
  • The Highland Fling by Meghan Quinn
A little chaotic, very funny, and full of personality. Meghan Quinn is great at mixing humor with romance, and this one really shows it.

Why I Keep Coming Back to Rom-Coms

Romantic comedies are my go-to when I want something that feels lighter but still engaging.

They’re the books I reach for when I want to relax, laugh a little, and still get that satisfying romantic payoff.

And when the banter is good enough, they’re just as hard to put down as any intense romance.
